"When summer is in full bloom, so is the Tioga County Fair! From Aug. 10th through the 15th, the Tioga County Fair packs more exciting things to see and do in an entire week than any other place in the county. And much of it is available for just the price of admission.
Visit the various livestock barns, pet a goat, watch cows being milked, see sheep being sheared and pigs being judged. Then there are the various displays of prize-winning vegetables, canned and fresh; hand-crafted quilts and clothing; photographs and paintings, even wedding cakes! Bid on the winning apple pie at the Baked Goods Auction. And with the price of the $5 gate admission fee, enjoy free carnival rides, as well as a host of other free events all week long for your amusement."
Step back in time at the Farm, Mine and Lumber Museum on the grounds. Watch a pair of oxen turn on command in a demonstration of how farming use to be “way back when.” Then, too, there are the rows of antique tractors and farm implements that were used not so long ago. Watch magnificent draft horses pull a weighted sled across the track.
And then there’s the mysterious magic of Magician Doug Welch roaming the grounds, ready to pull trinkets out of the ears of unsuspecting spectators. For loads of laughs, Hypnotist Michael Blaine will bring out the Elvis or Cher in you, if you dare to step onto his stage.
And if music is your fancy, then be sure to see the free Monday Night Music Fest with local award-winning artist Patrick Cole singing country, Shylock Foxx performing contemporary classics and Grass Stained Genes playing bluegrass. Throughout the week, in fact, there are free musical performances to suit just about every style. Catch Big Tiny Young and his Sound Machine, back by popular demand, singing through the 50’s and 60’s, while Barney Wilkins and the PennDixie Band presents Dixie, jazz, and swing. If you like horns, then St. James Brass Band is not to be missed. More country music can be heard when the White River Band takes the stage. Sadie Green Sales combines music and comedy with their “extraordinary vaudeville style musical act performing Classic Rags and Traditional Jazz along with crazy versions of authentic Jug Band Music.” And of course the fair wouldn’t be complete without the talented Penny Eckman singing a tribute to Patsy Cline or the McNett Country Band playing at the Round and Square Dance.
Nashville Now star ShotGun Red and his faithful companion Steve Hall and the Shotgun Red Band head up the featured entertainment with two hilariously entertaining shows on Thursday, Aug. 13. And Rawhide Rodeo is back on the track the same night with their bull riding and barrel racing extravaganza.
While the Truck and Tractor Pull and Demolition Derbies are the perennial crowd-pleasers, new this year, as well, is Miles Mountain Mayhem, a stunt show featuring highly skilled FMX (freestyle motocross) and BMX (bicycle) riders flying through the air, doing loop de loops, jumping over cars and performing other stunts that seem to defy gravity.
And what’s a fair without food? Concession stands offer a multitude of fair favorites from funnel cakes, hot sausages and blooming onions to cotton candy, kettle corn and hand-dipped ice cream. See what the kitchen’s dishing up as the daily fare or come for the chicken barbecue on Thursday, Aug 13 at 11:30 a.m.
Don’t miss a minute of fun and excitement this year at the Tioga County Fair.
The Fairgrounds is located in Whitneyville, just off of Route 6, midway between Mansfield and Wellsboro. For more information, go to the Tioga County Fair’s website at tiogacountyfair.com or call the Fair Secretary at 570-537-3196. Tickets can be purchased on-line or by calling 570-376-4751 or 570-662-2069.
